How learning works
With Bloom, children progress through a personalized learning path that is appropriately and automatically adjusted based on their current level of proficiency. Bloom does not march every learner through the same chapter on the same day.
The curriculum as a knowledge graph
Section titled “The curriculum as a knowledge graph”Bloom organizes our full curriculum as a knowledge graph: a map of knowledge, skills, tools, and experiences that develop your child’s intelligence and proficiency in academics and in life—across nine primary disciplines, including Life & Wisdom, critical thinking, and the arts alongside the core academic fields.
Each unit on that map is a Concept: a defined idea or capability inside a discipline, or integrative work that draws disciplines together.
The graph is connected by prerequisites. Some Concepts require others first, so your child is not asked to attempt work they are not prepared for, and material they already understand does not hold them back from progressing.
Where your child is right now
Section titled “Where your child is right now”Bloom tracks your child’s place on that map. That place is their Knowledge Frontier:
- What they have already mastered
- What they are ready to work on now
- What remains ahead because prerequisites come first
As they complete practice, demonstrate proficiency, and finish substantive projects, the frontier advances. Progress means demonstrated capability—not credit for exposure alone.
How they learn and prove it
Section titled “How they learn and prove it”The Concepts your child is ready to work on now are where daily learning happens. For each of those Concepts, Bloom uses three kinds of work—practice, demonstration, and application—so skill is built, then proven, then used. That triad is the same everywhere in Bloom (see the Adaptive Mastery Framework (AMF)).
Practice — Learning Units (LUs)
LUs teach, practice, and check understanding on one main Concept until your child is prepared to demonstrate—neither rushed by a calendar nor delayed without cause.
Demonstration — Proficiency Demonstrations (PDs)
PDs are how mastery is confirmed. When practice shows readiness, your child is invited to meet defined criteria for that Concept. PDs replace quizzes, tests, and traditional assessments as the gate to mastery—formative checks still happen inside practice; the formal proof is the PD (or an approved Project path).
Application — Projects
Projects ask your child to apply what they know in authentic work—often with room for you or a teacher to review and sign off. Some Projects also count as the demonstration for a Concept when the curriculum designates them that way.
When a Concept is mastered, it moves into “already mastered,” and the frontier advances to the next Concepts whose prerequisites are complete. If a demonstration does not yet meet the standard, Bloom identifies the gaps and assigns remediation—additional Learning Units targeted to those gaps—so your child can rebuild readiness and try again. There is no dead end.
What you will notice

- Subjects may advance at different rates; Bloom reports that clearly
- You can see what they are working on, how close they are to demonstration, and what follows
- Teachers, when involved, see the same readiness and mastery record that you do
- Productive academic work does not require filling every hour of a conventional school day
Mastery Points — progress you can celebrate
Section titled “Mastery Points — progress you can celebrate”Mastery Points (MPs) make productive work visible. Your child earns them as they complete Learning Units, Proficiency Demonstrations, and Projects—ongoing recognition for real effort along the path.
They also power lighter gamification and rewards: streaks, badges, and optional leveling so momentum feels tangible day to day. For many learners, that layer turns steady practice into something they can see building—a progress showcase alongside the mastery record.
Mastery Points showcase progress and effort. They do not decide what unlocks next or replace demonstrated proficiency. Advancement still follows readiness and mastery of Concepts; points celebrate the work that gets them there.
Time to learn—and time to live
Section titled “Time to learn—and time to live”Bloom is built for efficiency without lowering the bar. Sequencing by readiness, confirming mastery with evidence, and cutting dead time—waiting for the class, rehashing what is already known, or slogging through material they are not ready for—lets your child make serious academic progress without a full conventional seven- to eight-hour school day.
That reclaimed time is room to be a child: rest, play, family. It is also room for hands-on and life experiences seat time rarely supplies—making, outdoors, service, work, travel, arts, sports, faith and community. Those are not a luxury alongside school; they are part of becoming a capable, well-rounded person.
Because progress is mastery-based rather than calendar-locked, many learners can cover traditional academic ground sooner, or with less waste—without treating education as a race. That can open space for apprenticeships and real work, dual enrollment or advanced study, deeper interests, creative projects, service, or simply more life before the next chapter. AI in service of learning
Section titled “AI in service of learning”Bloom uses AI to personalize practice, feedback, and guidance while your child is learning—including customizing Learning Units and areas of focus to their needs, clearer explanations, better sequencing, and less wasted time. AI strengthens research-backed methods; it does not replace them. High-stakes decisions—readiness, mastery, and what unlocks next—still rest on clear rules and evidence.
